Grounded in five core instructional components, this three-part model--Engage, Empower, and Shift—guides both students and teachers through a powerful progression of inquiry, reflection, and stewardship.

This stage supports teachers in developing rich, thematic questions that promote inquiry and critical thinking. Planning templates help you design your own thematic units, while reflective commentary encourages you to deepen your own understanding. As students begin to explore environmental connections, teachers are equipped to guide thinking that is both personal and purposeful.

Empower

Deepen understanding through story.
Using Green Reads and Views—carefully curated books and media—educators lead students through three research-based comprehension cycles. These strategies are adaptable to diverse classrooms and build strong connections between literacy and real-world environmental issues. Teachers are supported in fostering voice, confidence, and insight through every reading experience.

Shift

Inspire agency and leadership.
In the final phase, teachers guide students in exploring shared values and imagining sustainable futures. Students begin to form their own Green Literacy Ideals—core beliefs and commitments that shape how they act in the world. With support from teachers and school communities, learners create, collaborate, and lead with purpose, turning classroom learning into environmental action.
