Guiding Questions for Building Your Own Green Reads List

In The Green Literacy Handbook, we support teachers in choosing their own Green Reads based on what works best for their students, classrooms, and communities. For us—and for those who may use the handbook—these guiding questions can help you evaluate books and digital media for your own thematic units and discussions:
  1. Connection to Humanity & the Environment
Does the work express a meaningful connection between people and the natural world?
  2. Critical Thinking & Environmental Justice
Does it encourage students to think deeply and critically when exploring environmental justice-themed stories or nonfiction?
  3. Multiple Perspectives
Does it allow students to examine diverse answers, viewpoints, and solutions to environmental dilemmas?
  4. Personal & Global Connections
Does it invite students to connect the story or digital media to their own lives, communities, and landscapes, inspiring eventual action toward earth stewardship?
