Green Literacy is a way of teaching that supports students in critical dialogue, systemic thinking and meaningful response toour human impact on thenatural world.   

Green Literacy is a process and practice toward literacy anchored in our relationship with the earth and humanity, rooted in environmental justice and stemming from Critical Pedagogy. ​

Green Literacy aligns to Common Core State Standards and fill in the literacy gaps between environmental science, social studies and literacy, and compliment interdisciplinary curriculum, such as International Baccalaureate and Project Based Learning.


  • Grades K-2 Teaching Demonstration with further suggested other titles that could be used with the same teaching strategies.  
  • Grades 3-4 teaching activities with suggested other titles that could be used with the same teaching strategies.
  • ​Suggested Grade 4-5 and Beyond teaching activities with suggested other titles that could be used with the same teaching strategies. ​​
  • Teaching strategies are highlighted and explained. The abbreviated letters/ numbers of the Common Core State Standards are provided in the charts within the Teaching Unit. You can find the unabbreviated Common Core State Standards for each teaching activity in Appendix B.​
